Naval diplomacy with Timothy Choi

2021-07-15 By Anders Puck Nielsen Leave a Comment

Watch my interview with Timothy Choi about naval diplomacy.

Tim is a PhD candidate at the University of Calgary, studying how navies in the Arctic have developed in response to the 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zone. He is extremely knowledgeable, and I feel an urge to take notes whenever he talks. When adding the subtitles, I discovered many details that I had missed during our actual conversation.

In this video we cover the basics of naval diplomacy. Tim has written an editorial for the Canadian Naval Review about a particular bit of Danish naval diplomacy that he identified in connection with president Trump’s peculiar offer to purchase Greenland. We use this as a starting point for the discussion, but really the contents should be relevant for everyone interested in the topic of how states use navies to achieve diplomatic results.
