Russia still cannot rescue another “Kursk”, despite new diving record

2018-11-15 By Anders Puck Nielsen Leave a Comment

Military divers from the Pacific Fleet have completed a record dive to 416 meters with the new rescue ship “Igor Beluosov”. But the overall status of Russia’s submarine rescue force is still poor.

Why does Russia break the INF Treaty?

2018-11-05 By Anders Puck Nielsen 1 Comment

Before the INF Treaty collapses, it is worth pondering why Russia is building a missile that breaks it. I argue that it is because they want a conventional missile akin to Tomahawk. It is silly if we turn this into a nuclear race.

2018-10-03 By Anders Puck Nielsen 1 Comment

Russia’s new Karakurt-class corvette is a potent warship for littoral warfare. It has many improvements over the Buyan-M class and is still equipped with nuclear capable Kalibr missiles.

Russia crowns terrible PR week with new “evidence” about MH17 shoot-down

2018-09-18 By Anders Puck Nielsen Leave a Comment

Russia has presented evidence that Ukraine owned the BUK missile that shot down Malaysian Airlines Flight 17. But their credibility record is really poor when it comes to explanations about MH17. This tops a week with several stories that make the Russian government look silly.

Exposure of GRU spy in Estonian Army is a blow to integration of Russians

2018-09-13 By Anders Puck Nielsen Leave a Comment

Army major Deniss Metsavas was a role model for successful integration of Russians in Estonia. He appeared on TV several times posing as a patriotic Estonian. But now he has been exposed as a GRU spy, and suspicion against the Russian minority has soared.

Baltic and Black Sea compared – deterred in the North

2018-08-07 By Anders Puck Nielsen Leave a Comment

Nikolas Gvosdev argues in War on the Rocks that Russia’s build-up in the Black Sea Basin is more concerning than in the Baltic Area. This leads me to reflect on the differences. The Black Sea area is more contested, and there is no united deterrence against Russia. But that does not mean that there is room for complacency in the Baltic region.

Russia’s military budget has nothing to do with the GDP of Spain

2018-06-04 By Anders Puck Nielsen 1 Comment

An often used reference to the GDP of Spain says nothing about Russia’s military potential. Instead, Russia’s defense budget gives them the same purchasing power as Germany, France, and the United Kingdom combined.

Gerasimov on the characteristics of modern warfare

2018-04-03 By Anders Puck Nielsen Leave a Comment

An analysis of general Gerasimov’s speech to the military academic community in March 2018. The speech confirms Gerasimov’s earlier statements about the nature of modern warfare. There is a clear focus on conventional military capabilities which is interesting considering president Putin’s dramatic talk about nuclear weapons earlier this month.
